Domaine des Comtes Lafon, famous for its Meursaults, also makes reds of great class. Santenots-du-Milieu lies within the commune of Meursault but its red wines are sold as Volnay premier cru, combining Volnay’s finesse with extra depth.

The vintage 1999. 1999 is a great red Burgundy vintage, abundant yet concentrated, with ripe fruit and fine structure.

Red cherry, raspberry and violet, with spice and, with age, forest floor and leather; silky, structured and long.

Service & pairing. Serve at 15–16 °C in a wide Burgundy glass. Decant young bottles briefly; open mature ones an hour ahead and pour gently, leaving any sediment in the bottle. Lovely with roast poultry, veal, mushroom risotto or mild cheeses.
