Description
Château Beychevelle, the Fourth Growth of 1855 whose label shows a ship with a griffin prow, sits in Saint-Julien close to the Gironde. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from gravel terraces give a wine known for charm and balance.
The vintage 1988. 1988 is a classic, firm vintage with marked tannins and freshness, the most austere of the 1988-89-90 trio and now rewarding with savoury complexity.
Red and black currant, cedar, tobacco and a hint of liquorice; medium-bodied, smooth and elegant, now showing the mellow, savoury notes of maturity.
Service & pairing. Serve at 16–17 °C. Lovely with roast chicken with truffle, veal chop, lamb or a mature Tomme de Savoie.
