Description
Sassicaia was born at Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, where the Incisa della Rocchetta family planted Bordeaux varieties. First released commercially with the 1968 vintage, it is the only Italian wine with its own single-estate DOC, Bolgheri Sassicaia. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc.
The vintage 1989. 1989 was a cool, rainy year in Tuscany; the best estates made elegant, lighter wines now in their tertiary phase.
Cassis, black cherry, cedar, Mediterranean herbs and a hint of graphite; elegant rather than heavy, with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish.
Service & pairing. Serve at 17–18 °C in a large glass. Decant younger vintages for one to two hours; stand older bottles upright the day before and decant gently. Superb with bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb, wild boar or Parmigiano Reggiano.
